Getting Started
Provisional Driving Licence
In order to start to learn to drive, you must hold a valid UK Provisional Driving Licence.
Applying for a provisional licence is straightforward, you can either apply online via the DVLA website or by completing a D1 paper application form, which can be ordered from the DVLA Form Ordering Service, or picked up from a Post Office.
Applying for a provisional licence currently costs £50.
You must be at least 17 years of age to drive a car in the UK (16yrs for motorcycles or mopeds), and you can normally apply for a provisional licence up to 3 months before you start driving.
Full details of the legal requirements for applying for a provisional driving licence can be found on the Government’s website.
